Which of the following statements is correct?

    A)  all diatomic molecules are polar

    B)  ammonia,\[N{{H}_{3}}\]and boron trichloride,\[BC{{l}_{3}}\]are both polar molecules

    C)  all polar diatomic molecules are composed of two different elements

    D)  all molecules of the type\[A{{B}_{4}}\]are polar

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

: In homonuclear diatomic molecules, the shared electrons are equally attracted to both the nuclei and therefore spend equal amounts of time near each nucleus. As a result, the molecule is neutral or non-polar. However in case of heteronuclear diatomic molecule, both the atoms joined by the covalent bond possess different electronegativity. As a result, the atom having higher value of electronegativity attracts the shared electron pair much more strongly than the other atom and the molecule becomes polar.
