Which one of the following is essential for photolysis of water?

    A)  Manganese

    B)  Zinc

    C)  Copper

    D)  Boron

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Photolysis of water requires light energy, and oxygen evolving complex (OEC) and an electron carrier \[{{\text{Y}}_{\text{z}}}\]. OEC complex was formerly called Z-enzyme. It has four Mn ions. Light energy brings about changes in \[\text{Mn(M}{{\text{n}}^{\text{+2}}}\text{,M}{{\text{n}}^{\text{+3}}}\text{,M}{{\text{n}}^{\text{+4}}}\text{)}\]which helps in removing electrons from \[O{{H}^{-}}\]component of water forming oxygen. Liberation of oxygen also requires CF and \[C{{a}^{2+}}\].
