In aqueous solution the ionization constants for carbonic acid are\[{{K}_{1}}=4.2\times {{10}^{-7}}\]and \[{{K}_{2}}=4.8\times {{10}^{-11}}\]Selection the correct statement for a saturated 0.034 M solution of the carbonic acid.       AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2010

    A) The concentration of\[{{H}^{+}}\]is double that of\[CO_{3}^{2-}\]

    B) The concentration of\[{{H}^{+}}\]is 0.034 M.

    C) The concentration of\[CO_{3}^{2-}\]is greater than that of\[HCO_{3}^{-}\]

    D) The concentration of\[{{H}^{+}}\]and\[HCO_{3}^{-}\]are approximately equal.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    \[{{H}_{2}}C{{O}_{3}}{{H}^{+}}+HCO_{3}^{-}\]     \[{{k}_{1}}=4.2\times {{10}^{-7}}\] \[0.034\,M\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,x\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,x\] \[HCO_{3}^{-}{{H}^{+}}+CO_{3}^{-2}\]        \[{{k}_{1}}=4.8\times {{10}^{-11}}\] \[x-y\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,x+5\] As\[{{k}_{2}}<<{{k}_{1}},\] disso in second is negligible \[\therefore \] \[x\text{ }+\text{ }y\cong x\] and hence \[({{H}^{+}})\cong [HCO_{3}^{-}]\]
