Which of the following transitions in hydrogen atoms emit photons of highest frequency?       AIEEE  Solved  Paper-2007

    A)  n = 2 to n = 6

    B)         n = 6 to n = 2

    C)                         n = 2 to n = 1

    D)         n = 1 to n = 2

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Emission spectrum would be found when electron makes a transition from higher energy level to lower energy level. Frequency of emitted photon is proportional to change in energy of two energy levels, i.e., \[x+\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}y=0\] So, emitted energy will be maximum for maximum v and hence, emitted photon has maximum frequency when there is a transition of electron from n=2 to n=1. While in the transition, from n=1 to n=2, energy will be absorbed.
