(i) Many members believed that English language should leave India along with the British rulers. They argued that its place should be taken by Hindi. (ii) But those who did not speak Hindi (TT Krishnamachari) conveyed a warning on behalf of the people of the South. Some of the people threatened to separate from India, if Hindi was forcefully imposed on them. (iii) A compromise was finally arrived at, that while Hindi would be the official language of India, English would continue to be used in courts, the services and communications between one state and another.
