Preparation of ethers by acid dehydration of secondary or tertiary alcohols is not a suitable method. Give reason.                                                                                                                                                                            [2]

    Answer:

3° alcohol is converted to ether by Williamson's synthesis. If 2° or 3° alcohol is converted to ether by dehydration using acid, alkenes are also formed due to formation of 2° and 3° carbocations as the intermediates which prefer elimination rather than addition.
