Explain the following with an example. (i) Reimer-Tiemann reaction                                       (ii) Williamson ether synthesis                                            [1+1]

    Answer:

      (i) Reimer-Tiemann's reaction Phenolic compounds on heating with (or) and KOH gives o-hydroxy aldehydes (or o-hydroxy carboxylic acids). If ortho position is already occupied, para isomer is formed. This reaction is called Reimer-Tiemann reaction.                                                             [1] (ii) Williamson  ether  synthesis Alkoxide  on reaction with alkyl halide to form ether. It follows mechanism and is called Williamson ether synthesis. Generally mixed ethers are prepared by this synthesis. For better yield, alkyl halide (R'X) should be 1° and alkoxide should be 2° or 3°.               [1] 3° alkyl halide favours elimination hence not used.
