How do increasing number of industries exert pressure on existing fresh water resources?

    Answer:

After independence industries are increasing in a rapid pace. The ever-increasing number of industries has made matters worse by exerting pressure on existing fresh water resources. Fresh water is almost limited though renewable, in India but over-exploitation and mismanagement of this resources by industries make the situation more grave. (i) Industries especially heavy industries use huge amount of fresh water for industrial purpose.  Industrial wastes pollute the resources of water, like the waters of rivers, sea, etc. (ii) These heavy industries for their energy consumption purpose depend on hydroelectric projects where electricity is generated by constructing dams on the rivers' upstream. As a result, the river almost dries in the lower stream area. (iii) The contamination of water due to industrialisation makes it hazardous for human use. Industrial wastes also can contaminate groundwater. In this way, increasing industries exert pressure on existing fresh water resources.                                          (5)
