      (i) Explain the Kolbe's reaction with an example,                                                                                                [1+1] (ii) Give the structures and IUPAC names of monohydric phenols of molecular formula

    Answer:

      (i) Kolbe's reaction is used to convert phenolic compound into o-hydroxy carboxylic acids. Phenol is converted into phenoxide and thus its reactivity is increased for electrophilic substitution. On passing into alkaline solution of phenol, sodium salicylate is formed which on acidification forms salicylic acid. (ii)                                                                                                                        [1]
