The inert gas which is substituted for nitrogen in the air used by deep sea divers for breathing is

    A)  Neon

    B)  Krypton

    C)  Argon

    D)  Helium

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Suba divers (deep-sea divers) breath air at high pressure under water. Increased pressure increases the solubility of almospheric gases in blood. When divers come towards surface, the pressure gradually decreases reaulting in the release of dissolve gases. This leads to an ailment called bends or decom pression sickness. To avoid bends, as well as, tonic effects of high concentrations of nitrogen in the blood, the lanks used by scub a divers are filled with air diluted with helium (11.7% helium, 56.2% nitrogen and 32.2% oxygen).
