A number of two digits is five times more than the sum of both the digits. If 9 is added to the number, the digits mutually interchange their places. The sum of the digits of the number is

    A)  11

    B)  7

    C)  6

    D)  9

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    Two digit number = 10x+ y, then \[10x+y=5(x+y)\] or         \[4y-5x=0\]                    ?(i) and   \[(10x+y)+9=10y+x\] or         \[y-x=1\]                       ?(ii) Solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), x = 4 and y = 5 \[\therefore \] Required sum of two digits = 4 + 4=9
