Two trains start from P and Q respectively and travel towards each other at a speed of 50 km. p.h and 40 km. p.h respectively. By the time they meet, the first train has travelled 100 km. more than the second. The distance between P and Q is

    A) 500km.

    B) 630km.

    C) 660km.

    D) 900km.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Let the distance travelled by the second train be x km, the distance travelled by the first train is (x + 100) km. The time taken by each train is the same when they meet at the point T. \[\therefore \,\,\frac{x}{40}=\frac{x+100}{50}\Rightarrow x=400.\] \[P\frac{x+100\,\,\,\,\,\,\,T\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,x}{{}}Q\] Thus distance travelled from P to Q = (400 +500) =900km.
