On applying reverse bias to a junction diode, it:

    A)  lower the potential barrier

    B)  raises the potential barrier

    C)  increases the majority carrier current

    D)  increases the minority carrier current

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

If positive terminal of battery is connected to n-type and negative to p-type the junction is said to be reverse biased. In this case both electrons and holes move away from the junction and away from each other. As there is no electron hole combination, no current flows and junction offers high resistance, so, width of depletion layer is increased because of increased barrier width or potential barrier.
