  • question_answer
A projectile is moving with speed \[60\,\,m{{s}^{-1}}\] at its highest point, where it breaks into two equal parts due to internal explosion. One part moves vertically up at\[50\,m{{s}^{-1}}\] with respect to ground. The other part will move at

    A)  \[10\sqrt{61}\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    B) \[110\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    C) \[120\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    D) \[130\,m{{s}^{-1}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Following the law of conservation of vertical momentum, the second splitted part of mass (m/2), must have a vertical downward velocity 50 m/s. Following the law a conservation of horizontal momentum, the second splitted part must have a horizontal velocity 120 m/s \[\therefore \]  Velocity of second splitted part \[=\sqrt{{{50}^{2}}+{{120}^{2}}}=130\,m/s\] Hence, the correction option is [d].
