  • question_answer Which one of the following set of quantum numbers is not possible for 4p electron?

    A)  \[n=4,\,l=1,\,m=-1,\,{{m}_{s}}=+\frac{1}{2}\]

    B)  \[n=4,\,l=1,\,m=0,\,{{m}_{s}}=+\frac{1}{2}\]

    C)  \[n=4,\,l=1,\,m=2,\,{{m}_{s}}=+\frac{1}{2}\]

    D)  \[n=4,\,l=1,\,m=-1,\,{{m}_{s}}=-\frac{1}{2}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    For 4P electron n = 4 \[l=1\] \[m=-1,0,+1\] \[{{m}_{s}}=\pm \frac{1}{2}\] As \[l=1,\]m cannot be equal to 2. Therefore set (C) of quantum number is not possible.
