The maximum velocity of the westerlies is observed over

    A)  Continents of the Northern Hemisphere

    B) Oceans of the Northern Hemisphere

    C) Continents of the Southern Hemisphere

    D)  Oceans of the Southern Hemisphere

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The westerlies attain maximum velocity between \[40{}^\circ \] and \[60{}^\circ S\]latitudes because there is complete absence of landmass which can offer some friction. Therefore they blow unobstructed with great force at high space. Here they are known as Brave West Winds. According to the sound created by westerlies, these latitudes are often called Roaring Forties, Furious Fifties and Shrieking Sixties, which are dreaded terms for navigators.
