    Solution :

The Union government has declared elephant a national heritage animal to step up measures for their protection. A notification in this regard was issued by the environment ministry on October 22, 2010, as recommended by the task force on elephant project and approved by the standing committee of National Board of Wildlife (NBWL) at its meeting on October 13, 2010. The government also plans to amend Wildlife (Protection) Act to pave the way for setting up of National Elephants Conservation Authority (NECA) on the lines of NTCA, constituted for tiger conservation. The decision is based on the recommendations of the Elephant Task Force led by Mahesh Rangarajan. In its report "Securing the Future for Elephants in India ", the task force notes that elephants have not received the same attention as tigers and other endangered wildlife, partly because their rate of decline has not been as dramatic. The task Force report says that there were over 25,000 elephants in the country, including 3,500 in captivity in zoos and temples, particularly in southern and north-eastern parts of the country. K. Ullas Karanth is a conservation zoologist and a leading tiger expert based in Karnataka, India. He is the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society India Program.
