[c] Vanchinathan (1886-June 17, 1911), popularly known as Vanchi, was a Tamil independence activist. He is best remembered for having shot dead Ashe, the Tax Collector of Thirunelveli and having later committed suicide in order to evade arrest. Vaikom Satyagraha (1924-25) was a satyagraha movement in Travancore (now part of Kerala) against untouchability in Hindu society. The movement was centered at the Shiva temple at Vaikom, near Kochi. The Satyagraha aimed at securing freedom of movement for all sections of society through the public roads leading to the Sri Mahadevar Temple at Vaikom. Srinivasa Pillai advocated social reform and organised the Hindu Progressive Improvement Society in November 1852. The Society advocated women's education, the upliftment of the depressed classes, and widow remarriage. The Self-Respect Movement is a movement with the aim of achieving a society where backward castes have equal human rights, and encouraging backward castes to have self-respect in the context of a caste-based society that considered them to be a lower end of the hierarchy. It was founded in 1925 by E.V. Ramasamy (also known as Periyar) in Tamil Nadu, India.
