A room is 4 m long and 3 m 50 cm wide. How many square metres of carpet is needed to cover the floor of the room?

    Answer:

    Given, length of the room = 4 m and breadth of the room =3 m 50 cm \[=3\text{ }m+50\text{ }cm\] \[=3\text{ }m+50\times \frac{1}{100}m\] \[=3\text{ }m+\frac{50}{100}m\]                         \[=3m+0.50\,m=3.50\,m\]                                     \[\left[ \because 1\,cm=\frac{1}{100}m \right]\] \[\therefore \] Carpet needed to cover th floor of the room = Area of the floor = Length \[\times \] Breadth \[=4m\times 3.50m\] \[=14sq.m\] Hence, the carpet needed to cover the floor of the room is 14 sq m.
