  • question_answer
In YDSE how many maxima can be obtained on a screen (including central maxima) on both sides of the central maxima if \[d=\frac{5\lambda }{2}\]where\[\lambda \] is the wavelength of light.

    A)  5

    B)  3

    C)  7

    D)  3

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    In YDSE, path difference \[\Delta x=d\sin \theta \] For maxima, \[\Delta x=n\lambda \] where\[n=0,\pm 1,\pm 2,...\] \[\frac{5\lambda }{2}\sin \theta =n\lambda \]as\[\theta <1\]\[\Rightarrow \frac{2n}{5}\le 1\Rightarrow n\le \frac{5}{2}\] i.e. n can have values\[~0,\pm 1,\pm 2\] so total 5 maximas.
