Which one of the following halides will not react with dimethyl sulphoxide?

    A)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}-CO-C{{H}_{2}}Br\]

    B)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  Br \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,H-C{{H}_{3}}\]

    C)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}-C{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}-Br\]

    D)  \[{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  Br \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,H-{{C}_{6}}{{H}_{5}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) reacts with \[1{}^\circ \] alkyl halide to give aldehyde and \[2{}^\circ \] alkyl halide to give ketone. It does not react with \[3{}^\circ \] alkyl halide because the carbon containing halogen does not have hydrogen.
