  • question_answer
Direction: For the following questions. Choose the correct answer from the codes [a], [b], [c] and [d] defined as follows.
Statement I On passing charge for sometime through acidulated water, equal volume but not equal mass of \[{{H}_{2}}\] and \[{{O}_{2}}\] are produced.
Statement II Equal number of moles of \[{{H}_{2}}\] and \[{{O}_{2}}\] have equal volumes.

    A)  Statement I is true, Statement II is also true Statement II is a correct explanation of Statement I.

    B)  Statement I is true, Statement II is also true and Statement II is not a correct explanation of Statement I.

    C)  Statement I is true. Statement II is false.

    D)  Statement I is false. Statement II is true.

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Statement I is incorrect Electrolysis of acidulated water involves the following reactions. \[2{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{\,}\,2{{H}^{+}}+{{O}^{2-}}\] \[4{{H}^{+}}+4{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{\,}\,\underset{\text{2}\,\,\text{volume}}{\mathop{2{{H}_{2}}}}\,\] \[2{{O}^{2-}}+4{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{\,}\,\underset{\text{1}\,\,\text{volume}}{\mathop{{{O}_{2}}}}\,\] Thus, mass as well as volume both are different when electrolysis of water is carried out. However, equal number of moles of two gases have equal volumes.
