  • question_answer
On adding 60 g of water to an oleum sample, 740 g of \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] are obtained. The strength of  given oleum is

    A)  103.8%

    B)  105.9%

    C)  108.8%

    D)  110.5%

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

     \[{{H}_{2}}{{S}_{2}}{{O}_{7}}+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{\,}\,2{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] Wt. of oleum sample \[=740-60=680\,g\] To 680 g of \[{{H}_{2}}{{S}_{2}}{{O}_{7}}\]. 60 g of water is added \[\therefore \] To 100 g of \[{{H}_{2}}{{S}_{2}}{{O}_{7}}\] water acidic \[=\frac{60}{680}\times 100=8.82\,g\] \[\therefore \] Strength of oleum = 100 + 8.82 = 108.82%
