If a variable takes the discrete values \[p+4,p-\frac{7}{2},p-\frac{5}{2},p-3,p-2,p+\frac{1}{2}\], \[p-\frac{1}{2},p+5(p>0)\] then the median is

    A) \[p-\frac{5}{4}\]

    B) \[p-\frac{1}{2}\]

    C)  \[p-2\]

    D) \[p+\frac{5}{4}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Arrange the data in increasing order as, \[p-\frac{7}{2},\,\,p-3\] \[p-\frac{5}{2},\,\,p-2,\,\,p-\frac{1}{2},\,\,p+\frac{1}{2},\,\,p+4,\,\,p+5\]                 As, number of observations = 8                 So, median \[=\frac{(4th\,\,observation)+(5th\,\,observation)}{2}=\left( p-\frac{5}{4} \right)\]
