Consider the following perhalate ions in acidic medium. \[Cl{{O}_{4}}^{-}(I),\,Br{{O}_{4}}^{-}(II),\,I{{O}_{4}}^{-}(III)\] Arrange these in the decreasing order of oxidizing power.

    A)  \[I>II>III\]

    B)  \[I>III>II\]

    C)  \[II>I>III\]

    D)  \[II>III>I\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Standard reduction potential (in volts) of the perhalate ions are given as below: \[ClO_{4}^{-}+2{{H}^{+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}ClO_{3}^{-}+{{H}_{2}}O;\]                                                                    \[E{}^\circ =1.19\,V\] \[BrO_{4}^{-}+2{{H}^{+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}BrO_{3}^{-}+{{H}_{2}}O;\]                                                                  \[E{}^\circ =1.74\,V\] \[IO_{4}^{-}+2{{H}^{+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}IO_{3}^{-}+{{H}_{2}}O;\] \[E{}^\circ =+\,1.65\,V\] more the standard reduction potential, more is the tendency of perhalate ion to undergo reduction and more stronger it will be an oxidizing agent.
