    Consider the following compounds.
    (I)  Pentane
    (II) Pentanol
    (III) Hexanol
The compound with highest boiling point and highest solubility in \[{{H}_{2}}O\] are, respectively,

    A) III and II

    B)        II and III

    C)   III and I

    D)       II and I

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] (i) The decreasing order of boiling point is: \[Hexanol>Pentanol>Pentane\,(III>II>I)\] Both alcohols have same H-bonding, but molecular mass of (III)>(II). Hence, the boiling point order is as given above. (ii) The decreasing order of solubility in \[{{H}_{2}}O:\] \[Pentanol>Hexanol>Pentane\,(II>III>I)\]Both alcohol have H-bond Both alcohols have H-bonding but non-polar part in hexanol (III) is larger than non polar part in pentanol (II). So (II) is more soluble than III. Pentane (I) is least soluble because of non polar character
