Anhydrous \[AlC{{l}_{3}}\]is covalent. From the data given below, predict whether it would remain covalent or become ionic in aqueous solution (ionisation energy of \[Al=5137\,\text{kJ}\,\text{mo}{{\text{l}}^{-1}}\],
    \[\Delta {{H}_{Hydration\,}}\]for \[A{{l}^{3+}}=-4665kJ\,mo{{l}^{-1}},\]
    \[\Delta {{H}_{hydration}}\]for \[C{{l}^{-}}=-381\text{kJ}\,\text{mo}{{\text{l}}^{-1}}\]

    A) Ionic

    B)       Covalent

    C) Both

    D) None of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] : If \[AlC{{l}_{3}}\]is present in ionic state in aqueous solution (\[A{{l}^{3+}}\]and three \[C{{l}^{-}}\]ions), then standard heat of hydration of\[A{{l}^{3+}}\]and three \[C{{l}^{-}}\]ions \[=-4665+(3\times -381)=-5808\text{ }kJ\text{ }mo{{l}^{-1}}\] This hydration energy is greater than ionization energy of Al, hence \[AlC{{l}_{3}}\] would be ionic in aqueous solution.
