Which one of the following complexes is not expected to exhibit isomerism?

    A) \[{{\left[ Ni{{(en)}_{3}} \right]}^{2+}}\]

    B)        \[{{\left[ Ni{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{4}}{{({{H}_{2}}O)}_{2}} \right]}^{2+}}\]

    C) \[\left[ Pt\,{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}} \right]\]

    D) \[\left[ Ni\,{{\left( N{{H}_{3}} \right)}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}} \right]\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

In \[\left[ Ni{{\left( N{{H}_{3}} \right)}_{2}}C{{l}_{2}} \right],\] \[N{{i}^{2+}}\] is in \[s{{p}^{3}}\]hybridisation, thus tetrahedral in shape. Hence the four ligands are not different to exhibit optical isomerism. In tetrahedral geometry all the positions are adjacent to one another, therefore, geometrical isomerism is not possible.
