Consider the following statements about the inscriptions of the Ashoka.
    1. They used different scripts in different, geographical locations.
    2. They used different languages in different geographical locations.
    3. Ashoka has been mostly referred by his name Ashokavardhana.
Which of the statement(s) given above is/are correct?

    A)  Only 1

    B)  1 and 2

    C)  1 and 3

    D)  Only 2

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

[b] We all know that Ashoka's full name was Ashokavardhana. But in his inscriptions, he is always called Devanampriya or Priyadarshi, except in the Maski version of his minor Rock Edict I, where he is designated as Devnampiya Ashoka. So, Statement 3 is eliminated. The inscriptions of Ashoka were for educating the common people and that is why, they used the scripts which people could read. So, Greek and Aramaic were used in Qandhar and Jalalabad, Kharosthi was used in Shahbazgarhi and Mansehra. Brahmi was used in all his inscriptions on rocks and pillars scattered all over India. So, Statement 1 and 2 are correct.
