Government of India (Gol) has organised a workshop on 'Challenges in Climate Changer Resilience and Adaptation' in collaboration with International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). Three major sectors green economy, adaptation to climate change and cryosphere have been emphasised in it. Cryosphere represents

    A)  the portions of the Earth's surface, where forest is in densest form

    B)  the portions of the Earth's surface, where water is in fresh form

    C)  the portions of the Earth's surface, where forest is in greenest form

    D)  the portions of the Earth's surface, where water is in solid form

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

[d] Some places on Earth are so cold that water is a solid-ice or snow, Scientists call these frozen places of our planet the 'Cryosphere.' It is the term which collectively describes the portions of the Earth's surface where water is in solid form including sea ice, lake ice, river ice, snow cover, glaciers, ice caps and ice sheets and frozen ground (which includes permafrost). The cryosphere is an integral part of the global climate system with important linkages and feedbacks generated through its influence on surface energy and moisture fluxes, clouds, precipitation, hydrology, atmospheric and oceanic circulation. The North pole is covered by a Cold Ocean called the Arctic Ocean.
