    [a] Manabendra Nath Roy formed the Communist Party of India in Tashkent, under the auspices of the Communist International in 1920. But, formally the CPI was formed in 1925 at the first Kanpur Party conference. Ideological differences led to the split in the party in 1964, one was CPI and another was CPI (Marxist).
