    3. The oath of office to the Pro Tern Speaker is administered by the President.
    4. If the office of the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker falls vacant, a member of the Panel of
Chairpersons performs the required duties until a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker is elected.
Which of the statements] given above is/are correct?

    A)  Only 1

    B)  1 and 2

    C)  Only 3

    D)  2 and 4

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

[c] The oath of office to the new members of Lok Sabha is administered by the Pro Tern Speaker, who is generally the senior-most member of Lok Sabha. Thus, Statement 1 is incorrect. The Deputy Speaker is directly responsible to the Lok Sabha and is not subordinate to the Speaker and so Statement 2 is also incorrect. Statement 3 is correct since the President himself appoints and administers the oath of office to the Pro Tern Speaker. Statement 4 is also incorrect since, when the office of Speaker or Deputy Speaker falls vacant, the President appoints a member of the House temporarily to perform such duties and such duties are not performed by anyone from the panel of chairpersons.
