A hydrocarbon does not react with chlorine in dark but gives a single monochloro compound  in bright sunlight. Identify the hydrocarbon.                                                                                                                          [2] Or Explain why (i) alkyl halides, though polar, are immiscible with water? (ii) Grignard reagents should be prepared under anhydrous conditions?                                                           [1+1]

    Answer:

does not react with in dark. Thus, (C = C) absent.                  [1] Thus,  is cyclopentane Or (i) If alkyl halides are to be dissolved in water, energy is required to overcome the attractions between the alkyl halide molecules and break the hydrogen bonds between water molecules. But very less energy is released when new attractions are set up between alkyl halides and water molecules and these are not as strong as the original hydrogen bonds in water. Thus, alkyl halides are less soluble in water.                 [1] (ii) Grignard reagent is decomposed even in very slight traces of moisture. Thus, Grignard reagent should be prepared under anhydrous condition. Solvent is ether. It should be and alcohol free otherwise Grignard reagent is decomposed.                  [1]
