    Define AIDS. Mention its causes and transmission. Which individuals have a high risk of acquiring it?

    Answer:

    AIDS is Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome.
    Causes: It is caused by the Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) which is a retrovirus having envelops enclosing RNA genome.
    Transmission of HIV occurs.
    - By sexual contact with the infected person, transfusion of contaminated blood and blood products, sharing infected needles, from infected mother to her child through placenta.
    High risk individuals:
    (a) Those having multiple sexual partners.
    (b) Drug addicts taking the drugs intravenously.
    (c) Individuals who require repeated blood transfusions.
    (d) Children born to an HIV infected mother.
