Examine the events that turned Vietnam into a battlefield after 1954.

    Answer:

The Geneva Convention and the division of Vietnam set in motion a series of events that turned Vietnam into a battlefield.
The Bao Dai regime was soon overthrown by a coup by Ngo Dinh Diem. Diem organised an authoritarian government. His dictatorial rule was opposed by National Liberation Front (NLF) organised by people of South Vietnam.
Ho Cho Minh supported the NLF with army and resources in its struggle for unification of Vietnam.
This alliance scared US who felt that once Vietnam became a communist country all neighboring countries would follow suit. To prevent the spread of communism, The US Government decided to intervene in Vietnam, sending in troops and army.
The US intervention led to a prolonged war between Vietnam and United States. Even though US had advanced technology and a brilliant army they had to finally bow before the determination, courage and patriotic spirit of the Vietnamese people. The war however proved disastrous both to Vietnam as well as US.
