The mean of 20 items of a data is 5; and if each item is multiplied by 3, then the mean will be

    A) 5

    B)  10

    C)  15

    D)  20

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Let the 20 items be \[{{x}_{1}},{{x}_{2}},.......{{x}_{20}},\] then sum of these \[={{x}_{1}}+{{x}_{2}}+..........{{x}_{20}}=20\times 5=100\] Multiplying each item by 3 and adding the result, we get \[3{{x}_{1}}+3{{x}_{2}}+...........3{{x}_{20}}=3\times 20\times 5=300\] Hence, the new mean\[=\frac{300}{20}=15.\]
