A father is 26 years older than his son. In 3 years' time, the son's age will be one-third his father's age. What is the present age of the son?

    A)  10 years

    B)         13 years

    C)  39 years

    D)         29 years

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

       Let the son's present age be x years. Then the father's age is \[(26+x)\]years. In 3 years' time, son's age \[=(x+3)\] years and father's age\[=(26+x+3)\] years \[=(x+29)\]years. \[\Rightarrow \]\[x+3=\frac{1}{3}(x+29)\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x=10\] \[\therefore \]The present age of the son is 10 years.
