Is it important to increase the area under irrigation? Why?

    Answer:

    (a) It is very important to increase the area under irrigation as water is the most important input in agriculture. Modern methods of agriculture, to increase production, would be of no use without irrigation. (b) Most of the farmers largely depend on rainfall. Monsoons are erratic in nature. Distribution of rainfall is uneven in India. Many areas get less than 20 cm of rainfall. (c) India's total cultivated area is not under irrigation. Less than 40% is irrigated even today. In order to grow 2 or 3 crops in a year, irrigation facilities are required.
