    Trace the growth of food grain production in India since independence.

    Answer:

    After independence, self-sufficiency in food grains was the foremost objective. (a) After Green Revolution, Punjab and Haryana recorded the highest rate of growth in food grain production where there was an increase from 7.23 million tonnes in 1964-65 to 30.33 million tonnes in 1995-96 respectively. (b) India has become self-sufficient in food grains during the last thirty years and has ensured a carefully designed food security system. (c) Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh recorded significant increases in rice yield. (d) Production in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa and the north eastern states continued to stagger.
