    What is the importance of a Constitution in a democratic country?

     (a) A Constitution signifies independence. It lays down the basic structure of the government under which its people are to be governed. (b) It establishes the main organs of the government?the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. It not only defines the powers of each organ, it demarcates their responsibilities and regulates the relationship between the three organs. (c) In a democratic country, the powers of the government are clearly defined in the Constitution and so it cannot misuse them. (d) In a democratic country, the Constitution is of great importance as it safeguards the rights of the citizens. (e) The Constitution is thus an index of the aspirations of the people. It is a living document, constantly growing and evolving according to the needs and aspirations of the people as well as the functioning institutions.
