What was the role of 'Solidarity' (a trade union) in establishing democracy in Poland?

It was the first time that an independent trade union was formed in any off the communist states,                                                  (i) Solidarity had about 1 crore members in Poland. (ii) It had revealed the widespread corruption and mismanagement of the government with the result that the government imposed the martial law and put thousands of Solidarity members into jail. (iii) Again in 1988, Solidarity sruck again when the Polish government grew weak and the economy of the Soviet Union was in decline. In April 1989, free elections were held.
