    Are the dynamics of poverty reduction the same in rural and urban India?

    Answer:

    (a) There has been a substantial decline in poverty ratios in India from about 55% in 1973 to 36% in 1993. However, the fall in ratios has been different in different regions. (b) Rural poverty continues to be higher than urban poverty though both have shown a significant decline. (c) Rural poverty has declined from 56.4 per cent in 1973-1974 to 27.1 per cent in 1999· Urban poverty has declined from 49.0 per cent in 1973-1974 to 23.6 per cent in 1999· (d) The total number of poor in rural areas still stands at 193 million people which is much than 67 million people in urban areas.
