A straight rod appears bent in water. Why?

    Answer:

Figure shows a straight rod AB partially immersed in water. Two rays starting from end B of the rod suffer refraction at the surface of water. The refracted rays appear to diverge from point B'. So CB' is the virtual image of CB. Consequently, the rod appears to be bent at point C.
