A bag contains one rupee, 50 paise and 25 paise coins in the ratio 5 : 6 : 8. If the total amount is Rs. 420, find the total number of coins.

    A)  798

    B)  789

    C)  978

    D)  987

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Let the number of coins of Rs. 1 = 5x
Number of coins of 50 paise = 6x
And number of coins of 25 paise = 8x
    According to question,
    \[5x\times 100+6x\times 50+8x\times 25=420\times 100\]
    \[\Rightarrow 500x+300x+200x=4200\]
    \[\Rightarrow 1000x=42000\Rightarrow x=42\]
    \[\therefore \]Number of coins of \[\text{Rs}\text{.1 =5}\times \text{42=210}\]
Number of coins of 50 paise \[=6\times 42=252\]
Number of coins of 25 paise \[=8\times 42=336\]
    \[\therefore \]Total number of coins
    \[\text{=210+252+336=798}\]
