What change in percent is made in the area of a rectangle by decreasing its length and increasing its breadth by 5%?

    A)  2.5% increase

    B)  0.25% increase

    C)  0.25% decrease

    D)  2.5% decrease

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Let the initial length and breadth of the rectangle be x and y respectively. \[\therefore \]    Initial area \[=xy\] Now, new length \[=x-\frac{5}{100}x=\frac{19}{20}x\] New breadth \[=y+\frac{5}{100}\,y=\frac{21}{20}y\] \[\therefore \]    New area \[=\frac{19}{20}x\times \frac{21}{20}y=\frac{399}{400}xy\] Area is decreased by the percent \[=\frac{xy-\frac{399}{400}y}{xy}\times 100\] \[=\frac{\frac{1}{400}xy}{xy}\,\times 100\] = 0.25%
