                             During 4th and 3rd century BCE, Karnataka was part of Nanda and Maurya Empire. The Brahmagiri edicts in Chitradurga dated around 230 BCE belong to emperor Ashoka and says of the nearby region as 'Isila' which means 'fortified region'. These rock edicts indicated that the Isila was the southernmost extent of the Mauryan empire. Samapa was the eastern part, whereas Satiyaputra and Keralputra were the approximate area in the south of Ashoka's Empire.
