    Population Growth Population Change
    (a) Growth of population refers to change in the number of people of a country during a specific period of time. (a) Change in population is due to birth rates,  death rates and migration,                   
    (b) Population growth can be expressed in terms of absolute numbers and in terms of percentage,                                (b) If birth rate is high and death rate is low, the population will increase and will bring change.
    (c) Absolute numbers are obtained by the earlier population {e.g., that of 1991) from the population of 2001. (c) Since 1981 birth rates have also started declining gradually, resulting in gradual decline in absolute numbers.
    (d) Population growth is also obtained in per cent per annum, e.g., a rate of increase of 2% per annum means that there is an increase of 2 persons for every 100 persons, (d) Migration is an important determinant of population change. It changes not only the population size but also the population composition of urban and rural population in terms of age and sex composition.
    (e) India's population has been steadily increasing from 361 million in 1951 to 1028 million in 2001. (e) Due to rural-urban migration, the urban population is 27.78%. In 2001, "Million plus cities" have increased from 23 to 35 in one decade, i.e., 1991 to 2001.
