Explain four factors which are responsible for the uneven distribution of population.

    Answer:

The geographical features which affect the distribution of population are:
    (a) Relief: Mountains and plateaus are sparsely populated, due to rugged terrain and infertile soil whereas plains are densely populated because of fertile soil.
    (b) Climate: Very hot and very cold, very wet and very dry regions are sparsely populated, due to unfavourable climatic conditions, e.g., Rajasthan very hot and very dry and Ladakh?very cold are sparsely populated.
    (c) Occupation: Primary, secondary and tertiary regions which provide more secondary occupations  due to industrial development are densely populated, e.g., Maharashtra, West Bengal, etc.
    (d) Metropolitan cities, trade centres, etc., provide more and better jobs, education and health facilities and therefore are densely populated, e.g., Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, etc.
    (e) Transport facilities : Better transport facilities in regions like Northern plains attract more people whereas mountain areas have inadequate transport facilities, hence are sparsely populated, e.g., Arunachal Pradesh, Mizorarn are sparsely populated.                       (Any four)
