The sum of the successors of two numbers is 40 and the difference of their predecessors is 8. Find the numbers.

    A)  23, 13

    B)  23, 15

    C)  40, 8

    D)  21, 15

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    (b): Let the two numbers be x and y. Given that, \[\left( x+1 \right)+\left( y+1 \right)=40\Rightarrow x+y=38\] Also, \[\left( x-1 \right)-\left( y-1 \right)=8\Rightarrow x-y=8\] Adding Eqs. (1) and (2), we get, \[2x=46\Rightarrow x=23\] Substituting x = 23 in any of the Eqs. (1) and (2) we get y = 15 \[\therefore \] The two numbers are 23 and 15.
