  • question_answer
A ray of light undergoes deviation of \[30{}^\circ \] when incident on an equilateral prism of refractive index  \[\sqrt{2}\] . The angle made by the ray inside the prism with the base of the prism is

    A) \[30{}^\circ \]

    B)        \[45{}^\circ \]

    C) \[60{}^\circ \]

    D)         zero

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

First we will calculate \[{{\delta }_{m}}\] for the given prism. \[\therefore \]  \[\sqrt{2}=\frac{\sin (60+{{\delta }_{m}})/2}{\sin 30}\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[{{\delta }_{m}}\mathbf{=3}{{\mathbf{0}}^{\mathbf{o}}}\] It means that the given case is of minimum deviation. We know that in the position of minimum deviation, the refracted ray is parallel to the base of prism.
